Serengeti is arguably the finest national park in Africa and offers a wealth of wildlife viewing opportunities. Pretty much every large animal in East Africa can be regularly seen in the national park.
Full of truly extraordinary wildlife sightings. Renowned for its predators – especially lions, leopards and cheetahs and with plenty of elephants favoring the western woodlands of Grumeti, the Serengeti dazzles even the most hardened safari critics.
There is even a recovering black rhino population concentrated around Moru Kopjes giving visitors a realistic chance to sighting all of the Big Five (lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo).
The Serengeti ecosystem is also a renowned bird-watching destination, with over 500 species. Therefore, on your Luxury Tanzania Safari do not miss the two parks as you will leave with the extraordinary memories of the great wildebeest migration and pure premier safari lodges and camps services.
Every year, over 2 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle migrate from the Serengeti to the Maasai Mara Reserve in Kenya. If you’re there at the right time, you can spot herds of wildebeest and zebra stretching to the horizon.
Wildlife watchers are better off timing their trip to coincide with the drier months (June to October). Aim for June and July if you can, as the incredible wildebeest migration usually tramples the plains at this time. If you’re keen on seeing predators in action, visit in late January or February. This is the hiatus in the annual rains, when the wildebeests calve.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area is in northern Tanzania. Its home to the vast, volcanic Ngorongoro Crater and “big 5” game (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino). Huge herds of wildebeests and zebras traverse its plains during their annual migration. Livestock belonging to the semi-nomadic Maasai tribe graze alongside wild animals. Notable among more than 400 species of birds in the area are flamingos, silvery-cheeked horn bills, superb starlings, and bronze and tacazze sun birds.
The Ngorongoro Crater is famed for being the only intact caldera in the world. A wildlife sanctuary flourishes in its basin where the floor has been fertilized by the volcanic soil, attracting an array of wildlife ranging from lions and leopards to elephants and hippos. Safaris can be taken through the crater and in the Ndutu Lake area to the west of the crater, known for its particularly strong wildlife population and the Great Migration passing through annually.
Since the wildlife mainly stays in the crater all year round, there is really no good or bad time to visit. However, given that the crater floor does get busy with vehicles, it can be more pleasant to visit during low season. Higher water levels in Lake Magadi (in the center of the Crater) also result in higher concentrations of flamingos. Whenever you visit to Ngorongoro, you are guaranteed excellent safari action. The beauty of an Ngorongoro safari is because of its unique micro-climate, it can be enjoyed year-round.
